Fayette County Public Schools is committed to excellence in mathematics teaching and learning for all students. Mathematics provides a way to understand patterns, quantify relationships, and make predictions based on data.
The mathematics curriculum is based on the Georgia Standards of Excellence. The standards provide a pathway for teachers to help develop students into confident and competent mathematical problem solvers. Critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creative problem solving are key components that also help develop a deep understanding of mathematics for students. Using various instructional methods including modeling, manipulatives, hands-on activities, and technology, teachers actively engage students in experiences that provide opportunities for rich problem solving and constructing and applying mathematical concepts. Teachers also connect mathematical concepts to real life situations that are incorporated throughout the mathematics curriculum to promote relevance and engagement for students.
The Georgia Standards of Excellence for Mathematics for each grade level may be found at GeorgiaStandards.org.

Mathematical Practices
There are eight Mathematical Practices that describe the reasoning behaviors students should develop as they build an understanding of mathematics. Developing these “habits of mind” builds students’ capacity to become mathematical thinkers.- Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
- Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
- Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
- Model with mathematics.
- Use appropriate tools strategically.
- Attend to precision.
- Look for and make use of structure.
- Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Private Tutoring
From time to time, students may benefit from private tutoring outside of school in certain subject areas. If your student could benefit from additional help with mathematics, we have made the following list of tutors available to help Fayette County students. (Disclaimer: We do NOT recommend one tutor over another; we simply provide this list as a resource for parents. Please check with your child's school guidance counselor for specific recommendations before proceeding):
